How big is five trillion? Does the debt matter? Should the surplus pay off part of the debt or come into taxpayer's pockets?
Questions like these show what a complex topic the national debt is. One way to make sense of complex things is to divide the topic into roles that different highlight different viewpoints.
Your job is to adopt one of the four roles below and to develop a deeper understanding of how that person might see the issues. You do not have to agree with the role, but you should do your best to fairly represent it. Why? Because your team needs to come up with a good answer to the big Question and you can get a better answer when you really debate the details and viewpoints.
