What I’d like to achieve!
Jenny Luca - Toorak CollegeÂ
I’d like to establish where I’m going with this project and how it can link into my role within the school. The students at our school (I think!) see the library as being connected with new technologies and are amenable to being involved in learning new technologies from within the library. I’d like to find a way to have students engage in discussions with other students about ideas that are posted on the myplace page. Is there a way to have a library class portal where interested students from differing year levels can interact with the page during out of class hours (Recess and lunchtime for example). Alternatively, or perhaps additional to, I’d like to establish a class portal for my Yr 7 tutorial group and we could use it as a means of exploring issues of interest that could prompt discussion. My tutorial time is limited but I could see it working.

Do the students take what they have learned during library sessions back to their class work? Do other staff use you as a resource for ITC work in the classes?

Thanks for the comment Jennie,
Yes they do transfer their learning - I’ve seen them applying techniques I’ve taught them to other projects from differing subject areas. Staff do see me as knowing something about technology and I try as hard as possible to offer my services to classrooms. I make it clear that I am willing to come to their classrooms to help. The English faculty who work closely with me are happy to do so but I’m finding it harder with other faculty areas.

Hi Jenny,
the generic skills used in the library are invaluable and used in all areas. i have seen librarians drive the development of research skills among students with all teachers - i would think that the technologies are well suited to be of great value in achieving this

I agree Gail. I’ve only taken over as Head of Information Services this year and am pushing to get research skills embedded in classes from year 7-10. The times have been a changing and there is an even greater need to teach students how to use the web effectively for their research.
